Besides radical journalism, we’ll also be talking about zines as alternative word-based media. While a good portion of the short section from the Alternative Media Handbook deals with zines in print form, we’ll also be talking about the zine’s transition to the digital world. Here are the 2 examples from the book, plus one I added:

  • Fall of Autumn – This is a great entry point into the world of the online zine, with blogs, discussion boards, links to many zines, podcasts (not word-based, I know), and a lot of other cool stuff.
  • ZineWiki – As might be guessed, this is essentially the Wikipedia of zines – open-source, user-generated media that even manages to look aesthetically like its namesake.
  • La Petite Zine – As the title implies, this is a little online zine. It’s run much like a literary journal, with editor Daniel Nester’s [update: now Melissa Broder’s] offbeat vision guiding its content. Look up Issue #12 in the Archives for a familiar name.

Not really sure the fourth one is an imitation of the original, but it still has its humor to it.

    That’s all folks.

  2. ***To some extent***, wouldn’t any news program or media site be considered a zine? They tend to recopy or simply reproduce images, video, and even scripts/accounts of the news story from other media outlets like the AP, etc. Half of the blog written news stories i’ve read have come directly from other sources like AP – especially pictures. here is an example:
