Fed up with Anti-feminists

Feminist. Feminism. What comes to mind? A woman picketing and burning her bra? Think again.

Instead, think of a family man concerned for his daughters’ healthcare rights as they grow up. Not your typical vision of a feminist, right?

Webster dictionary defines feminism as “the doctrine advocating social, political, and all other rights of women equal to those of men”.

I am fed up with feminism having a negative connotation. If you are a woman and don’t believe in yourself being equal to your boyfriend, father or male professor, PLEASE go put on an apron and withdraw your right to vote.

From the issue of abortion to free birth control to sex education in schools across the United States, it is important for everyone to care. It doesn’t matter the gender you identify with. Somehow we need to reinvent the word feminism. Women need to realize they have a responsibility to become involved with women’s issues and at the very least, stay informed. Men need to come to terms with the fact that if they respect their girlfriend, worry for their mother’s health or want their future daughters to have freedoms and be protected by their country, YOU too are a feminist.

I am a Women’s Studies minor and it absolutely bothers me when a man jokes about my “worthless” minor, but when women make fun of it, that disgusts me. We all need to take control. Women’s issues are so fragile right now. We could be jettisoned back decades by some of Congress if we aren’t careful.

And, as a side note, if you claim you don’t care because you weren’t brought up in a feminist household by equality-embracing parents, seriously consider becoming where the teaching starts in your family tree, or maybe you shouldn’t plan on a family at all.

To follow… my semester project all about Strong Women.

  1. Yes, Mia. Yes. Couldn’t agree more. The misconception about Feminism is enormous, and those- especially the women themselves- who say they are not for it probably don’t really know what it means.
PS: I am taking Feminist Political Thought, you should definitely take it in following semesters! Absolutely eye-opening.
