Participatory Journalism

From the reading & discussions this week, my understanding of ‘participatory journalism’ is the term for an organization, or just one person, who is an unofficial journalist. These people or organizations write stories and updates in an area close to their home or county. These are people “without professional journalism training using the tools of modern technology” (Alternative And Activist New Media page 126). I like this statement, anyone with a blog who writes about things that are not openly publicized who edit, revise, and publish their work are going through the motions of a journalist, just not in a professional environment. This was inevitable with all of these blog sites like Tumblr.com, WordPress.com and others. People want to speak, and people want to express their opinions.
