Breaking news Consumers Handbook

Too often media outlets rush too quickly to be the first on a breaking news story and end up reporting things that are wrong. This week’s podcast looked at different ways news consumers filter bad information during big events such as Sandy hook, the Boston Marathon, and the DC navy yard shooting. Imprecise news reports has become almost standard in todays social media. On the media, looks at how all bad information comes out. They formulated a consumer’s guide to sorting “good information from bad.” The handbook came up with nine tips like: Pay attention to to the language media uses, for example, OTM pointed  out when watching a breaking news coverage, we should listen to key words such as, “we are receiving reports,” because it can help tell how reliable the information is. Although the handbook is is a good idea, I don’t think people will actually follow these tips. It disgusts me when news outlets filter wrong information. Is it more important for them to report untrue news to keep viewers watching?

  1. I too feel that disgust about news reporters reporting just so they can be saying something. It seems like it is almost a competition between broadcasters rather than them fulfilling their duty to the public. The only saving grace is that the reporters do keep digging until they get the story right and eventually do correct their reports.
