Contract Over Violence

Recently, music artist Kesha was turned down by the court to be able to get out of her contract with Sony Music Entertainment. This was due to the fact that she had stepped forward with accusations against producer Dr. Luke for having raped, drugged, and emotionally abused her since they’ve been working together. Everyone was waiting for the big court hearing last Friday in hopes that Kesha will be able to get out of her contract that would be able to allow her to no longer work with Dr. Luke.

Unfortunately, the courts final decision was that Kesha could not get out of her contract and therefore must stay with Sony. Photos of the artist in court sobbing has since circled the internet and many fans, celebrities and even people who don’t know Kesha are firing back. It has raised awareness about the issues of women and domestic violence. How could the court allow someone who has been raped and abused stay in a contract with her abuser that she is being forced to still work with?

This led to a lot of celebrities tweeting their support. Lady Gaga tweeted that she stands with Kesha and so did Demi Lovato, Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus and Lorde. Taylor Swift donated 250,00 dollars to Kesha for any financial needs for her at this time. A fan also started a GoFundMe to raise money to buy out Kesha’s contract with Sony Music Entertainment. According to the GoFundMe page, it would take 2 million dollars to buy Kesha’s contract. Currently there has been over 10,000 dollars raised.

Also, an argument has been brought up about contracts. Why was Zayn Malik, a former member of One Direction, allowed to be released from his contract for being “unhappy”, but Kesha has to stay in her contract despite the fact that she was raped and abused. You would think it would be harder for Zayn to get out of a contract because he’s in a famous boy group while Kesha is just a solo artist.

  1. Wow this is crazy! Well we see how male privilege is still a big issue of today. There’s no way it should be easier for a male boy band artist to be easily released just for being unhappy and Kesha has to literally suffer while working with a man who abuses and rapes her. Is that really a smart idea ? Our courts are so stupid sometimes.
