meme – a humorous image, video, piece of text, etc. that is copied (often with slight variations) and spread rapidly by Internet users. It is an element of a culture or system of behavior that may be considered to be passed from one individual to another by nongenetic means, especially imitation.
If you guys been living under a rock this week or just haven’t heard about the new Internet crazes, but this Damn Daniel video that has popped up on all of my social media feeds (and honestly, Im sick of it) to the point where now it’s become almost apart of popular culture with now celebrities are taking apart of making fun of the meme. Meme culture has grown so much especially with the expanding use of social media that it’s now been “targeted”
This week I was watching a video Facebook on the “”Damn Daniel” and how he got swatted. According to ABC 7, Riverside,CA police got a prank call on Tuesday claiming that the teem that filmed “Damn Daniel” shot his mother with an AK-47. The police went to their home just to find out it was fake. The family themselves have received crazy phone calls and emails and even death treats. But this is common for people who are popular on the internet and is almost a right of passage. For example many celebrities, and political figures fall for swatting and stalking and whatsoever.
Another popular hashtag that went around Twitter in January was #Wastehistime2016, which was more of a semi-hilarious way that people “waste time” when they are seeing someone romantically. In January a man kills his date after she was inspired by the hashtag and used him to take her shopping and dinner just to then have her dropped off at her boyfriend’s house.
It’s almost interesting to see how much how innocent memes are in terms of for their humor purposes and how it can almost be twisted in the sense that taking something that is supposedly light humor can take such a negative. I think it would be almost horrible to be a popular figure especially in todays media because it makes you public information where anyone can get a hold of. Is it really necessary to take one’s image and publicity in order to manipulate for devious purposes?
