Mary Lee and I interviewed three individuals and asked them different questions on how their experience was with ask.fm (an anonymous website). Click below to listen!
For my semester project I decided to combine some of my favorite things. Writing is my passion, specifically poetry. I saw an opportunity to publish my first piece, and see how others reacted to it. The poem is basically about how although our society is labeled as “connected”(since we are always on our phones) we are actually disconnected from the real world. To go with the poem I decided to take some footage and produce it into a short video. It show genuine footage and reactions. The person in it is my best friend, I was surprised to see how often she really did take out her phone while we were hiking.
After throwing it together and before presenting it for class, I decided to put it up on Facebook to see the reactions it would get. I ended up generating many likes and shares, people messaging me left and right. Many of the messages were encouraging, but some pointed out a perspective I didn’t see. Some people claimed my video was very controversial, something I was really not expecting to hear. Some claimed that the internet and media are the only way people can feel part of the world, pointing out people with depression finding friends on the internet who had helped. I hadn’t thought of this. What I had put out there was for people to view and to maybe encourage people to reconsider whipping their phones out for once, not offend anyone. All in all posting my video to a social platform actually broadened the horizon of my intended project. Its safe to say everybody has an opinion, and is not afraid to voice them online.
Minds sown to our phones,
We don’t even stop to breathe,
We are suffocated by these little glowing screens.
But who needs air anyways
When you’re sucking in for an instagram pic,
Or holding your breath because you haven’t gotten a text back from Nick
We don’t have time to breathe.
We only have time for timelines and then time flies and the next thing I know
Me and reality are saying goodbye.
FOMO is fear of missing out
And yet we don’t even stop to look around,
We neglect the fact that it is all tunnel vision,
Tell me. Whens the last time you watched the sun as its risen?
We have five senses and we only use our eyes
Little do we know they are just getting fried,
Whens the last time you sat around and talked, expanded your mind?
What was life like before you let it pass you by?
What happened to working with our hands?
Now we all think we’re someone, busy tending to our fans
This takes a toll on my soul,
The fact that you think the real world is dull.
You think that this is real life? Its all digitalized.
You call it browsing,
I call it hypnotized.
Everything you’ve ever thought has been compromised.
Do you even have a stance?
Cause I read that article too, I don think that’s just chance.
Do you even know where you are?
Or have you clicked so many times that you’re now so far
From the main point, the original destination.
The media’s got our brains in jars
And we just go with it no hesitation.
Beauty isn’t pixels,
Its hiking up steep hills.
Its beautiful moments,
All you have to do is notice, stop trying to decode this.
What are we doing living vicariously through other people’s posts,
spinning uncontrollably through our own litost.
We’ve let our phones become the reason for our plateau,
Tell me. Is this life worth living if there is no growth?
Do you enjoy snapchat?
“I do enjoy snapchat very much, I think it is a great way to connect with friends. The way we communicate on snapchat is like a whole new world.”
What is your favorite part about snapchat?
“Snapchat is a different way to communicate than any other social media. I like how we can’t send quick pictures to anyone on our friends list and I enjoy seeing what my friends and family are doing by just looking at their story. I also like the filters I find them so cool and I can’t take a picture without them”
What do you think about the filters?
“I think they are funny, some make me look amazing but others just are something to laugh at. They are cool and way different than anything else.”
Do you realize how they distort your face?
“A little bit but I don’t think its that big of a problem, I think its just fun. Maybe to think of it its not that great but that won’t stop people from using it and feeling more beautiful.”
“I didn’t really think about that though”
Now realizing it, do you think it changing what we define is beauty?
“defiantly but what doesn’t? We have photoshopped models everywhere we look. One day thick girls is what guys like and the next we see these Victoria secret models walking down the runway and everyone wants to be them”
I also recorded a podcast of me and a friend speaking about snapchat and its filter. I also added videos in the background of celebreties using the filter to show not only the change in their facial structure and their skin but also to show how distorted our beauty standards have become. I enjoyed this project a lot because I was able to research a social media website that I use often. I didn’t know about the filters distortions until I researched about it and it opened my eyes and showed me a whole new world that I even showed my friends. I enjoyed this project very much and was able to get a ton of feedback
For mine and Mary Lee’s semester project, we were interested in detecting how much of cyber bullying goes on and what are the short and long term effects of it. We came across a man of advocation against cyber bullying and his name is Keith Deltano. Keith Deltano gives very inspirational speeches to children, teens, and adults all over the world. The idea of cyberbullying really does effect everybody and creates these physical appearance insecurities in some individuals. We also explored how many people actually use Yik Yak and other anonymous sites, for good and for bad. Majority of the things people wrote were negative, so this tells us what people are using these anonymous sites for. Ask.fm was another anonymous website, that are friends and we included used to use, this site allowed people to ask you anonymous questions. We have to admit, all the questions were too inappropriate to show to the class. It amazes us how people enjoy harassing others over a screen and can remain completely anonymous. We are planning to research more on cyber bullying and how it’s becoming a big issue in today’s world. This top is very relevant in today’s world and important for everyone to be aware of the this bullying that takes place online. This video is the one we played in class of Keith Deltano and is worth a rewatch! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PV7RvFz7sb8
Here is my semester project on what the echo chamber effect is and why it’s important. I would encourage everyone who see’s this to please watch it, and give me you’re honest feedback.
For my research paper, my topic was micro-celebrities in the media. I researched how and why these micro-celebrity models become famous and how they accumulate millions of views with just one post. My research paper and semester go hand in hand, I interviewed my friend who I would consider to be some what of a micro-celebrity. In our interview we spoke about her political views, her community of followers, and how she feels about the negative comments that follow being in the “lime light”. One thing that she touches base on is how she had two interest, posting Youtube videos of her weightless journey and being a political activist on Twitter, both accumulating thousands of views and likes. She mentioned that, she had to choose one and couldn’t intwine them for she would loose followers on either social media platform. Her statement really intrigued me and furthered my own personal research.
